No One Should Go Hungry: United Way IBX Responds to SNAP Crisis

As the federal government shutdown continues, a historic and deeply troubling milestone is approaching: the suspension of SNAP benefits for millions of Americans. For the first time in history, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is being halted during a shutdown, leaving 42 million people nationwide without food assistance this November.

Here in the Inner Banks, the impact is immediate and personal. Nearly 13,000 households across Beaufort, Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington counties rely on SNAP to help put food on the table. Without these supplements, families already stretched thin by rising costs will face empty cupboards and impossible choices.
United Way Inner Banks is stepping up—and calling on our communities to do the same.
We are organizing a rapid-response coordination session to bring together churches, food banks, pantries, social service agencies, and county leaders. Our goal is simple but urgent: to align efforts, share real-time updates, and ensure no family goes hungry.
This is more than a logistical challenge. It’s a moral one.
“We know our communities are resilient—but no one should have to face hunger alone. This is a moment for all of us to activate the heart of our communities. Whether it’s a donation, a food drive, or a few hours of volunteer time, every act of compassion matters.” Sue Tidd, Executive Director, United Way Inner Banks
We also believe this moment calls for a community-wide activation of generosity. That means:
Mobilizing volunteers to support food distribution
Encouraging churches and civic groups to host food drives
Inviting donors to help fill the gap with financial support
Coordinating with local retailers and suppliers to stretch resources further
If you or someone you know is looking for information on food banks, meal programs, or other local resources, please call 211 and speak with a trained Resource Navigator. Help is available 24/7.
To our partners in government, faith communities, and nonprofit networks: thank you for all you do. We look forward to working with you in the days ahead to meet this challenge head-on.
And to every resident of the Inner Banks: if you’ve ever wondered how to make a difference, now is the time.
Let’s show what it means to be a united community.
